Chief Susan Ballard became the Honolulu Police Department's 11th chief and Hawaii's first female chief of police on November 1, 2017. She joined the HPD in 1985 and worked in a wide range of field and administrative assignments. As a commander, she has led the Kaneohe and Kalihi patrol districts and the Finance, Training, and Central Receiving divisions.
Chief Ballard was born in Virginia and raised in North Carolina. She has a Master of Arts degree in health and physical education from Tennessee Technological University.
