Kiran Shaw

Kiran Mazumdar-Sharw is the Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon Limited, an Indian biotechnology company. Biocon was founded in 1978 after Mazumdar-Shaw, a brew master, began manufacturing industrial enzymes. She transformed the company into a fully integrated bio-pharmaceutical company with a portfolio that includes research and product development on diabetes, oncology, and auto-immune diseases. Within a year of founding, Biocon was manufacturing and exporting enzymes to the US and Europe, the first Indian company to do so. Biocon has since grown to a billion-dollar company and the 7th largest biotech employer globally

Mazumdar-Shaw founded the Biocon Foundation in 2004 to implement health and environmental programs to benefit the economically weaker sections of society. She has received the Nikkei Asia Prize for Regional Growth, Express Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit Award for Dynamic Entrepreneur, the Economic Times 'Businesswoman of the Year' in 2004, and the 80th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes in 2012. She has also received honorary doctorates from University of Abertay, Dundee, University of Glasgow, and Heriot-Watt University. She holds a Bachelor of Science from Bangalore University and a brew master degree in malting and brewing from Melbourne University.
