No mercy: A conservative who has served on the U.S. Court of Appeals in Houston since 1985, Jones, 53, has argued for limits on appeals from death row inmates as well as stricter bankruptcy laws that would prevent people from hiding assets and not paying their creditors. "Bankruptcy is a favored haven for deadbeat dads," she says.
Sweet and sour: Once known for her caustic remarks from the bench, Jones says she's become a "kinder, gentler judge." Off court, she is devoted to her husband and two sons and often skips lunch so she can get home to cook dinner for her family.
