The First Female "Top Cop"

Janet Reno became the first woman Attorney General of the United States when President Bill Clinton appointed her to the post on February 11, 1993. She was re-appointed by Clinton in 1997 and served until his presidency ended in 2001.

Reno was born on June 21, 1938, in Miami (FL) and attended public school in Dade County (FL), where she became Debating Champion. She enrolled at Cornell University in Ithaca (NY) where she majored in chemistry and was named president of the Women's Self Government Association.

In 1960 Reno enrolled at Harvard Law School, becoming only one of 16 women in a class of more than 500 students. She received her degree in 1963.

In 1973 Reno took a position in the Dade County State's Attorney's Office, and in 1978 she was appointed State Attorney General for Dade County. She was elected to the Office of State Attorney in 1978 and was re-elected four straight times.

At the time of this writing, Reno is actively pursuing the Democratic nomination in the Florida Gubernatorial race.
