Brig. Gen. Laurie Hummel is the Adjutant General of the Alaska National Guard, and the Commissioner, Alaska Department of Military & Veterans Affairs. In 2012, she retired from a 30 year active duty Army career at the rank of colonel. For over 20 years she worked in the fields of tactical, operational, and strategic intelligence.
She returned to Alaska to research the effects of military investments made throughout Alaska during the Cold War era.
She was a tenured professor by the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering and a geographer with expertise in political demography and the geographical roots of terrorism, she was also a policy consultant to government agencies and other organizations. She joined several missions in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
