Major General Terry L. Scherling served as Special Assistant to the Chief, National Guard Bureau, Arlington, Virginia acting on his behalf to direct Army and Air resources, plans and programs for more than 460,000 personnel, across 54 States and Territories with an annual budget in excess of $22 billion. Prior to this assignment, General Scherling served as the Director, Joint Staff, National Guard Bureau, responsible for coordination and communication of all National Guard support for domestic military operations with the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Staff, combatant commands and Interagency/Intergovernmental partners.
General Scherling is a graduate of North Dakota State University and was commissioned in 1975. She is a career logistician and has served as Chief, Supply Division, Air National Guard; United States Property and Fiscal Officer; and Chief Support Officer for the Air National Guard. After Sept. 11, 2001, General Scherling led the standup of the Directorate of Homeland Security, Deputy Chief of Staff for Air and Space Operations, Headquarters United States Air Force, providing total force support to operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom.
As the Deputy Director for Antiterrorism/Homeland Defense, General Scherling served as the military adviser to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of Defense for all domestic military operations and provided support to operations Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and Winter Freeze as well as Hurricane Katrina.
